Bungie has revealed more details on its upcoming Star Wars-inspired Destiny 2 expansion, Renegades. Out on December 2, the expansion is set in the Lawless Frontier and will see Guardians band together to take down a growing threat. While Renegades isn’t set in the Star Wars universe, it does share a lot in common with it, and Bungie’s vidoc teased how players will grow their legend as a notorious figure in Destiny 2’s underworld and use that influence to take down the Barant Imperium. Here’s a closer look at everything we just learned about Destiny 2: Renegades.

Welcome to the Lawless Frontier

Welcome to the Lawless Frontier

Taking place after the events of the Edge of Fate, Renegades will see Guardians take their first steps toward defying the prophecy of the Nine. But while work on “binding the Nine” begins, there’ll also be new threats that rise up to threaten Sol. Caught in the middle of this is Drifter, as his past has caught up to him and has left him frozen in Stasis–a nod to Han Solo’s frigid fate at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. Before he got frozen, Drifter began to explore the Barant Imperium and how it had the potential to become a major problem in the future.

A “one-of-a-kind” Destiny story

Bungie says that it took inspiration from Star Wars–in collaboration with LucasFilm Games–to create a “one-of-a-kind” Destiny story about taking big risks to change the future. This has resulted in both franchises meeting thematically, as Renegades echoes ideas of Star Wars, particularly themes of hope and of underdogs rising up to take down dangerous forces.

Star Wars parallels aplenty

Star Wars parallels aplenty

Renegades will deepen the parallels that already exist between Star Wars and Destiny. Bungie’s game already has its Sith in the form of Dredgen, the Jedi-like Praxic Order that patrols the frontier, and the new Barant Imperium is essentially the Cabal in First Order armor.

That's no moon

That’s no moon

The Barant Imperium also references a signature story trope from Star Wars: a superweapon that poses a threat to all life in Sol. Bungie hasn’t revealed what that weapon can do yet, but the concept art hints at it being incredibly powerful and its firing sequence is almost identical to the Death Star super-laser.

Return of the Praxic Order

Return of the Praxic Order

One of the more mysterious organizations in Destiny 2, expect the Praxic Order to play a bigger role in Renegades. “They are our Jedi in this release, and they are very focused on order and law, and understanding that there is a binary in our universe of good and evil. We get to poke at that a little bit in a way that suits our story and our world, while still feeling very much like the inspiration that we’re calling from,” narrative director Allison Luhrs said in the vidoc.

It's time to do crimes

It’s time to do crimes

With the Barant Imperium sitting at the top of the criminal underworld, players will start out at the bottom when they enter the Lawless Frontier. By working with syndicates and building up their notoriety, players will eventually become powerful enough to topple the Barant Imperium.

Rule the frontier

Rule the frontier

Big chaotic activities are scattered across the Lawless Frontier, and players can choose what job they want to do when they enter this location. Players can also choose “Renegade Abilities” to smash they way in, grab loot, and then extract themselves from the battlefield–or die trying.

Try not to fall into the Sarlacc pit on Mars

Try not to fall into the Sarlacc pit on Mars

The Lawless Frontier holomap will drop players into locations that feel like they were lifted straight out of Star Wars. Swampy areas are reminiscent of Dagobah, Europa has hints of Hoth in its icy landscape, and Mars even has Sarlacc pits infesting its surface. These are still Destiny locations, but with a Star Wars twist to them in Renegades.

We've got a job for you

We’ve got a job for you

Bungie didn’t reveal too many details on the Jobs that players can choose, but the brief footage seen in the Renegades vidoc did show what they can choose from: Bounty Hunt, Sabotage, and Smuggle. There will be a random element to them–from map location when you spawn in to different objectives–and they’re designed to be highly replayable. Players can also expect some curveballs along the way, like a missile tower targeting you from halfway across the map, but those diversions can be lucrative.

Renegade abilities can even the odds

Renegade abilities can even the odds

Bungie added that Renegade Abilities will be unlocked throughout the Renegades campaign and endgame. Air strikes, Cabal drop-pods, and vehicles like the Cabal Walker can help even the odds, but for even more power, you can access powers from the Nine and other upgrades to help you blast through the opposition. Described as a “tech tree” of options by Bungie, Renegade abilities cover offense, defense, and support skills.

The Lawless Frontier isn't just about power

The Lawless Frontier isn’t just about power

While being able to smash an enemy with a Cabal drop-pod is very useful, players will also have to make a few shady deals with the powerful syndicates operating in the wild. Players will have to work with–and against–syndicates who primarily operate from the hub of the underworld, the Tharsis Outpost. Now a thriving black market, the location formerly known as Tharsis Junction looks and feels like your typical hive of scum and villainy that you’d find on Tattooine. Inspired by the Mos Eisely cantina, there are several nods to Star Wars here, but with a Destiny spin.

Syndicate wars

To move up in the criminal underworld, you’ll need to interact with three syndicates. The first one is an Eliksni organization, known as the Pikers. Described as an anarchist biker gang, the Pikers don’t worship machines and they’re commanded by their Kell, Riliks.

In a big surprise, a splinter group of Vex have also set up their own gang, the Tharsis Reformation. This group broke away from Maya Sundaresh’s Vex, and now that they have individuality, they’ve used their freedom to do crime and dress in snazzy uniforms.

Notoriety is power

Notoriety is power

To make a name for yourself in the Lawless Frontier, you’ll have to gain power and use it to bend others to your will. The endgame of Renegades will offer more gear to help with this mission, as this is where you’ll find the best weapons, armor, and exclusive cosmetics to outfit your Guardian with. Successfully completing jobs will eventually allow you to take on high-risk and high-reward missions, with the pinnacle activity being a new Dungeon.

Guardians shoot first

Another new weapon sub-type will be introduced in Renegades, called Blasters. Details on these are slim for now, but overall, they’re the kind of weapons that look and feel like they were pinched from a Stormtrooper arsenal. Blasters use ammo from your reserves, and while they don’t need to be reloaded, each shot does need to be charged up and players will need to manage their cooldowns to prevent them from overheating.

Finally, it just wouldn’t be a Star Wars-inspired expansion without a lightsaber, right? Players will be able to equip a Praxic Blade that can be used to cut down enemies, and Bungie teased that it has several Exotic-esque qualities to its design.
