Fortnite OG Season 5 is set to be a momentous one. The original Season 5 was an eventful and memorable season, as it introduced a couple of the game’s most beloved battle pass skins in Strider and Drift, and it got the Fortnite story going in earnest with the arrival of Kevin the Cube. But Season 5’s most lasting impact probably actually came from some of the new items it introduced to the loot pool. It was in this season when we originally saw shockwave grenades and grapplers, Fortnite’s most persistent movement items, for the first time.
While many items are sticking around from Season 4, Fortnite OG Season 5 will add a nice pile of toys to the loot pool for Epic’s throwback mode. Let’s take a look at them now.
Double Barrel Shotgun
This short-range killer is more or less the ancestor of the more recent Outlaw Shotgun that was introduced in Chapter 5. The Double Barrel Shotgun can fire twice before reloading and has very little range, but it packs quite a punch if you’re close enough–hitting another player with the entire blast from both shots will knock them, even if they’re at full health and shields. You just have to be really close to do that.
Heavy Sniper Rifle
It’s extremely sluggish to aim, and it takes forever to reload after a shot, but the Heavy Sniper has one particularly large upside: All headshots with that thing are an instant kill. They’re also excellent for taking down golf carts.
Compact SMG
The Compact SMG is a high-rarity variant of the standard Submachine Gun with a 40-bullet magazine. It’s excellent for spraying an enemy from up close and also has plenty of utility at mid-range.
Suppressed Assault Rifle (coming later in the season)
While it may look like little more than the standard Assault Rifle with a silencer on the front, it’s only because that’s pretty much exactly what it is. It’s quieter than the regular version, but the tradeoff is that it does a little bit less damage per shot.
Rift-To-Go
This little gadget allows you to summon a rift wherever you happen to be, and it can be a life-saver when your enemies are closing in–just don’t forget that people you’re fighting can chase you through the rift if they’re close enough.
Shockwave Grenades
It’s kinda hard to believe that there was ever a time when Fortnite existed but Shockwave Grenades didn’t, but apparently it’s true. Shockwaves are great for throwing yourself up hills and through builds–or away from somebody who’s about to pump you in the face.
Grappler (coming later in the season)
You point this thing at where you want to go, and then you go there. Regular Battle Royale just got a taste of this gadget in Chapter 6 Season 3 with Robin’s mythic variant, but this original version isn’t quite as exciting since it won’t trigger your glider. Still, it’s one of Fortnite’s old reliables for a reason.
Port-A-Fortress (coming later in the season)
This device instantly builds a tall-defensive structure with bounce pads around the outside to keep out the haters.
Golf Carts
While Season 4 originally introduced Fortnite’s first vehicle with the shopping cart, it wasn’t until Season 5 that we got one that was actually worth using: the golf carts of Lazy Links.
