Are you curious about how to cure Madness in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers? This particular mechanic is integrated into the game’s story, as the titular character continues to suffer from the Feathering curse. This means you have to contend with this status effect throughout the campaign.
How to cure Madness in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers – Madness status and Inner Demon guide
Madness is a fairly complex mechanic, which is why we’ve included a bunch of details in our guide. We start by explaining its effects in relation to combat and survivability. Then, we look at items and functions that increase or decrease your Madness level. Of course, we also talk about the Inner Demon that spawns from time to time.
What are the effects of Madness?
The Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Madness mechanic impacts various facets of the game. You can see the current amount/value in the “Character” screen. Think of this as a high-risk, high-reward system. Certain boosts become active at higher values, but there are also some detrimental effects.
Combat effects
- You can unlock perks in the Impetus Repository skill tree that complement your character’s Madness. Some of these take effect once you have 50% Madness.
- At 90% Madness, you deal and take more damage. You also gain more Red Mercury when defeating enemies.
- Moreover, if you’ve activated the “Conversion” perk in the skill tree, your Swift Draw ability becomes stronger and restores health on hit.
Red Mercury and death effects
- If you die at 50% Madness, you only lose some of your Red Mercury.
- If your Madness level is above 50% but below 90%, you lose plenty of Red Mercury on death.
- However, if you’re at 90% Madness or higher, you will lose all your Red Mercury if your character perishes.
- Note that you can still retrieve your lost Red Mercury, but there are caveats in case the Inner Demon has spawned. We discuss this creature a bit later in our guide.
How does killing enemies affect Madness?
Madness in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is primarily gained or lost depending on the enemies you fight:
- Killing human enemies causes Madness buildup. Dying also increases your Madness by a bit.
- Killing feathered enemies–i.e. avians and cursed zombie-like foes–decreases your Madness.
Madness and items: Items that you can purchase and items that affect the curse
Several items affect Madness buildup. For instance, the Maddening Incense increases your current Madness, while also preventing its loss temporarily.
Moreover, you can check the Shrine’s Invoke menu to see various items. Each item has a cost and, when purchased, your Madness increases by that amount. Here are a couple of examples:
- Plumed Branch – Instantly gain +5 stacks of Skyborn Might; adds +20 Madness.
- Feather Pearl – Returns you to the last Shrine that you used without losing Red Mercury; increases Madness; adds +30 Madness.
- Golden Feather Pearl – Prevents the loss of Red Mercury the next time your character dies; adds +100 Madness.
Note that you can only purchase items up to the maximum threshold of your Madness. For instance, if you’re at 140/169 Madness, you won’t be able to buy the Golden Feather Pearl since it adds +100 to the value.
How do you cleanse Madness via altars?
If you want to cure Madness in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, you need to visit altars. There’s one in Shu Sanctum and another at the cliffside area just beyond the pavilion. When interacting with these altars, you may spend a couple of items:
- Fragment of the Divine Gift – Dispels some of your Madness.
- Divine Gift – Fully dispels all your Madness.
Wuchang’s Inner Demon
Last but not least, we definitely have to talk about the Inner Demon in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. This doppelganger spawns at specific areas in the game, but it can also appear if you perish while at full/maximum Madness.
If you return to the area where your character died, you should see the Inner Demon waiting for you. It holds all the Red Mercury that you dropped, which means you must defeat it if you want to recover your hard-earned resources. But, if you fail, then all that Red Mercury will be lost forever.
Note that the Inner Demons that spawn in specific areas may drop Stone Needles. These items are needed for Temper Acupoint upgrades.
