Are you hoping to survive weather events and disasters in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach? Plenty of things can happen on your long trek across regions, which means you still have to be mindful of your surroundings. Our guide has a few tips to keep you well-prepared for these eventualities.

How to survive weather events and disasters in Death Stranding 2

Many weather-related disasters and incidents can occur during your travels. Some can be seen from a distance, which means you should definitely avoid the area for a time. Others only give you a brief warning before they trigger.

Generally speaking, the APAS Enhancement skill called Weather Analysis Display should be helpful in the long run. When enabled, it shows the weather forecast in your location if you look at the sky. This gives you enough information to go by in case you plan on staying in a region for quite a while.

Sandstorms

Sandstorms

You can see sandstorms from a mile away, so it should be easy to survive this weather event in Death Stranding 2. When you spot dark clouds and a wall of dust coming from a distance, then that’s your sign to get out of dodge and head the other way.

That said, if you find yourself in the middle of a sandstorm, you need to carefully navigate your surroundings due to poor visibility. Moreover, strong winds will buffet you around. If you’re carrying a lot of crates, you’re going to be shifting your weight repeatedly until you make it out or until the skies clear.

Gate Quakes

Gate Quakes

There’s a brief notification in the lower-left corner of your screen when Gate Quakes occur. This is quickly followed by loud rumblings and parts of hills and mountains collapsing around you or in front of you. Press L2 + R2 as you walk around so you don’t lose your balance. If you’re in the middle of an uphill trek, then you need to watch out for rolling boulders, as well.

Timefall

Timefall

Timefall is a strange phenomenon akin to rain, except it also causes the rapid degradation of vehicles and containers. Ideally, you’ll want to construct a Timefall Shelter by using a PCC tool–you can stay within its radius until the weather event ends, all while keeping your crates in tip-top condition. The Timefall Generator APAS perk is also useful since it can recharge Sam’s battery.

Lastly, note that Timefall has other variants or extremes. Torrential rains corrode your fixtures and cargo more rapidly. In colder climates, meanwhile, Timefall takes the form of snow instead.

Floods

Floods

When it rains, it pours. And as any Filipino will tell you, when it pours, then half of Manila becomes submerged in murky waters. That’s about the same in Death Stranding 2, as rivers will overflow and certain areas become nearly impossible due to flooding.

If you attempt to cross flooded rivers on foot, then you have to maintain your balance so you don’t get washed away. It’s either that, or you could easily stumble and lose your footing due to the current. Alternatively, if you’re driving a vehicle, then traversing flooded areas uses up more battery energy.

In any case, if you did bring a ladder or two, you can construct a makeshift bridge to get across rivers. Alternatively, you can use a PCC to build a bridge foundation, and then donate the necessary resources to its terminal. This creates a wider bridge made of concrete and metal, which vehicles should be able to cross without issues. These fixtures remain permanent in your game, too, until you decide to dismantle them. Players may also use them or they can help donate their own resources, too.

Bushfires and firestorms

Bushfires and firestorms

Fires can occur in the wilderness in Death Stranding 2, and they can quickly go out of control. The mere act of passing through flames causes damage to your health/blood level, vehicle, and cargo. Needless to say, you need to find another path so you don’t get scorched.

Alternatively, you can fabricate a Tar Cannon weapon. When equipped, it spews out tar that extinguishes flames in a small area. But you do need to switch to an actual weapon in case there are hostiles nearby.

Tar pools

Tar pools

Speaking of tar, this particular environmental hazard isn’t necessarily a weather event in Death Stranding 2, but it’s still dangerous nonetheless:

  • Tar pools will slowly cause Sam to sink to the depths if he wades into them. Sam will perish if he’s unable to get out.
  • Cargo and vehicles will also sink and be lost for good if they’re in tar pools.
  • There are critters that look like bugs or eels that live in or near tar pools. They will attempt to swarm all over your vehicle and drain its battery.

BT spawns

BT spawns

Beached Things or BTs are cursed specters doomed to walk the Earth. They are insidious, and they’re out to get you. If you do find yourself in a BT-infested area, then you’ll receive a warning in the form of (a) time slowing down, (b) the screen changing into a murky reddish-brown color, and (c) plants sprouting from the ground. This Death Stranding 2 weather event is usually followed by Timefall rains just to make things more challenging.

Voidouts

Voidouts

Voidouts in Death Stranding 2 are akin to what veterans have seen in the previous game. These incidents occur if a Catcher BT manages to devour Sam, which will then unleash a catastrophic explosion that annihilates everything within an effective radius.

Regardless of the terrain, resources, or features, a voidout will only leave behind a smoking crater filled with dust and the lingering chill of despair. These effects last, so we suggest reloading a backup save in case you’re unlucky enough to experience this terrible mishap.
