Hasbro’s Magic: The Gathering live-action film has taken a major step forward. Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald–the screenwriting team behind Hasbro’s unproduced Power Rangers movie–have been tapped to write the screenplay for Magic: The Gathering.

As reported by Deadline, BlackBerry director Matt Johnson was previously in negotiations to helm Magic: The Gathering, but it’s currently unknown if he closed his deal with Legendary and Hasbro. In addition to the abandoned Power Rangers movie, Gardner and Fitzgerald also worked on The Trench, a DC Extended Universe film that was meant to be a spin-off from Aquaman. The duo are also teaming up for Trancers, a Prime Video original series based on the cult-classic sci-fi film of the same name.

Magic: The Gathering has been one of the most popular trading card games for the last three decades. The game’s parent company, Wizards of the Coast, also purchased the rights to Dungeons & Dragons before Hasbro bought the publisher in 1999. Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary intend to use the Magic: The Gathering film as the beginning of a shared universe across movies and TV shows.

Hasbro has indicated that new video games are on the way for both Magic: The Gathering and D&D, but it’s unknown when those projects are expected to be completed. Hasbro has also attempted to push D&D as a multimedia franchise, most recently with the live-action film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. While the movie received positive reviews, its disappointing $208.2 million worldwide gross meant limited chance of an immediate sequel, though the film did much better when it arrived on streaming services. Additionally, a live-action series is in the works for Netflix.

Wizards of the Coast recently released Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy collaboration, which has already become the best-selling set in the history of the franchise. Those cards may have even solved a mystery from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
