The Switch 2 and its launch titles are available now, including Mario Kart World. Players have discovered that, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch, Mario Kart World has smart steering turned on by default. Smart steering is an auto-pilot function, of sorts, helping players literally stay on track.
It’s a helpful feature for those who want it, but it’s not for everyone. Thankfully, it’s easy to toggle off. You can toggle it off by pressing X during the vehicle-selection screen, or it can be turned off from the pause menu mid-race.

Mario Kart World also has auto-accelerate, auto-use item, and tilt controls, but these are not toggled on by default. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe worked this way as well, so this is nothing new or surprising.
Mario Kart World was the No. 1 most popular game on the Switch 2 eShop charts on launch day, and that’s no big surprise given the game is included with a Switch 2 bundle and is by itself a must-have title for the new console. The game did encounter some launch-day struggles, as numerous people reported issues downloading it, presumably due to a surge in demand.
The game is up and running normally now, and the Cow character is proving to be extremely popular, with many matches made up nearly entirely of people racing as the bovine.
In other news, we’ve learned that Mario Kart World is missing one feature that many really wanted to see. The game features a vast map with its courses connected to each other, but the franchise’s most iconic course, Rainbow Road, isn’t available right away.
