A Mass Effect TV series has been in the works for a long time, but it seems to be picking up steam. In November 2024, the TV series was revived at Amazon MGM Studios, and now it’s reportedly brought on a showrunner in Doug Jung, according to Deadline.
Jung wrote for Netflix’s acclaimed serial killer show Mindhunter and the movie Star Trek Beyond. He’s also the showrunner on the upcoming Apple TV+ series Chief of War starring Jason Momoa.
A showrunner is a key position on a TV series. This is the person who runs… the show. A showrunner oversees many creative decisions, including scripts, along with many other duties.
Craig Mazin, for example, is the showrunner of HBO’s The Last of Us, and he’s involved with the show’s writing, directing, and production efforts. A showrunner wears many hats and is a critical component of how a show comes together. Apple TV+ has an excellent documentary called Showrunners: The Art of a Running a TV Show that digs deep into what a showrunner does.
Given the demands of showrunning responsibilities, it’s interesting that Jung is apparently joining Mass Effect as its showrunner at the same time as he holds the same job for Chief of War. However, that show is out in August and is presumably nearing the finish line already.
We also do not know when production the Mass Effect TV show may begin, or even if Jung is confirmed as the showrunner.
The Mass Effect show was first revealed back in 2021, at which time Amazon was said to be “nearing a deal” for the series, so it’s been in the works for a long time already. Daniel Casey (Fast & Furious 9) is writing and executive producing the show, while BioWare’s Michael Gamble is an executive producer as well. Ari Arad (Iron Man, Uncharted, upcoming Zelda movie) is an executive producer, too.
There are no plot details available as of yet for the Mass Effect show, but the main series follows the spacefaring events of Commander Shepard. A movie version of Mass Effect was planned at one point, but it never got off the ground.
BioWare veteran Mac Walters, who worked on Mass Effect but has since left the company, said in 2021 that a Mass Effect TV show makes more sense than a film. “If you’re going to tell a story that’s as fleshed out as Mass Effect, TV is the way to do it. There’s a natural way it fits well with episodic content,” he explained.
The Mass Effect TV series could appear on Prime Video, similar to the network’s Fallout series, which is coming back for a second season this December. Prime Video is also making a God of War TV show, but it’s starting over from scratch. A Split Fiction movie starring Sydney Sweeney is potentially coming to Prime, too.
As for the Mass Effect series, a new game is now in the works at BioWare, and it’s going to bring back one of the franchise’s most signature style choices.
