The Resident Evil games may be full of terrifying monsters, but none might be as persistent or relentless as Duolingo’s mascot, Duo the green owl. As he constantly reminds users to complete their language lessons, almost haunting them, the official Resident Evil Portal account posted a crossover nobody expected.
“Our new biological weapon. Go. Spread language learning to the world,” the translation reads (via Automaton).
The playful exchange between Resident Evil Portal and Duolingo Japan’s Twitter account started off already wild, showing a muscular version of Duo replacing the T-002 Tyrant from the original game. Duolingo Japan responded with an edit of its own, placing Duo in the role of the T-00 Tyrant (Mr. X) from Resident Evil 2. Given Mr. X’s reputation for relentlessly chasing players, fans then understood the assignment.
The fun continued when Resident Evil Portal posted the popular “English or Spanish” meme, asking fans which language Leon Kennedy is studying. Fans pointed to Resident Evil 4, where Leon travels to Spain, and agreed he must be learning Spanish. The Portal account followed up with an image of Leon practicing basic Spanish on his phone, as he desperately tried to communicate with hostile villagers from the opening scene.
The latest reply from Duolingo Japan featured another buff version of Duo, now wearing Mr. X’s signature fedora. He warned that he’ll chase fans until they can play Resident Evil in English. Fans joined the joke by posting their app progress, which Duo approved. Some are even joking that this is why Leon is missing from Resident Evil Requiem–because he’s still trapped in a never-ending Spanish lesson.
