Bella Ramsey has discussed the departure of Neil Druckmann from HBO’s The Last of Us TV series, saying the show will aim to stay true to the spirit of the game despite Druckmann and the show parting ways.
“The world of The Last of Us is his creation, and so his voice and creative input. It doesn’t just go away in Season 3 because he’s not as actively involved. It will always be his creation,” Ramsey told Variety. “And we’re always in everything that we do, honoring the game and Neil’s creation. He’ll definitely be missed on set. But his spirit is the story.”
Druckmann announced his departure from The Last of Us earlier this month, saying he was stepping aside to instead focus on writing and directing Naughty Dog’s next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Druckmann said co-creating the TV series was a “career highlight,” adding that he was honored to work alongside Craig Mazin on the series. For his part, Mazin is staying with The Last of Us for its upcoming third season, which may be the show’s last.
Season 3 is in the works but doesn’t have a release date yet. Season 3 will focus on Abby’s story, but how much will Ellie be in Season 3? Ramsey said, “I sort of know, but I can’t tell you, I’m afraid.”
Season 3 is planned for release in 2027, but it remains to be seen if that will be the last. “Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that,” HBO boss Casey Bloys said.
The Last of Us Season 2 recently picked up 16 Emmy nominations, including a nod for Best Drama. The first season received 24 nominations, bringing the show’s total to 40 across its first two seasons.
