It’s come to light that the Xbox 360–a console originally released in 2005–has just received a new system update. Reddit user trackwalker said they booted up their Xbox 360 to find that the dashboard was updated.

What’s new? That’s not exactly clear, but replies to trackwalker’s post on Reddit mention game thumbnail images no longer appearing stretched out. Others are pointing out that the dashboard now prominently displays ads for the Xbox Series X|S consoles, encouraging people to “experience next-gen performance” by upgrading to a new system.

The Xbox 360 store officially closed in July 2024, at which point hundreds of games and content for them vanished. TrueAchievements reported that also at this time, a number of tiles related to the store got dumped as well, making the dashboard overall look pretty lackluster.

Any backward-compatible Xbox 360 (and original Xbox) games remain available for purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. Online multiplayer support, meanwhile, depends on publishers and developers for Xbox 360 games and wasn’t affected by the store’s shuttering.

The Xbox 360 generation was a high point for Xbox, with more than 80 million units sold. The Xbox One, released in 2013, reportedly sold worse and the Xbox Series X|S is understood to have underperformed the Xbox 360 as well. Microsoft is now developing a new home console with AMD, in addition to pursuing new branded handhelds like the upcoming Xbox ROG Ally. Microsoft also partnered with Meta for an Xbox-branded VR headset.
